OUTDOOR Learning & Play
The Seeds Have Been Planted…
In Winter, MMCS was selected for a Southern Pines Garden Club Grant to landscape Voss Hall and completed a topography survey of the 12-acres.
In Spring, renowned outdoor children’s designer Rusty Keeler visited our campus as the initial step in designing a master outdoor plan. He toured the campus, observing recess, and outdoor lessons, meeting with staff and students, and speaking to the community about the power of natural play.
Over the summer, United Way awarded the school a grant to create a nature trail around the field and woods to improve health outcomes of our students through exercise and time outdoors. Rusty Keeler delivered a 15-page comprehensive plan for outdoor spaces that incorporates best practices for children outdoors, Montessori philosophy, the beauty of our existing landscape and the ideas of the school community. Large gates were installed beside Voss Hall to define the space of the future ‘Woods Playscape.’
This Fall garden installation started featuring seasonal bushes and trees and the beginnings of a sensory garden. MMCS also celebrated Global Children’s Day with a ‘Play Day in the Woods’ in which students had time to play and explore the naturally-wooded areas across our beautiful 12-acre campus.
We are growing the outdoor space of our dreams at Moore Montessori Community School!
More information on ways to support our efforts will be announced here soon!
